I Never Even Knew This Existed

<lj-embed id="6" />

Wizard Rock, that is.
This is a whole other dimension to the Harry Potter fandom that i just didn't know even existed. Split between mocking it mercilessly and, dare i say, actually getting all giddy inside for its sheer awesomeness/geekiness, I must say, move over Jonas Brothers. Harry and the Potters has definitely got something that the perfectly coiffed trio has yet to wield: balls. That's the only explanation for how two young boys, each dressed as harry potter in v-neck sweaters, gryffindor colored-ties, and glasses, flailing about the stage, can yell out things like: "watch the wizards rock it out like this" and "who rocks the party that rocks the party that rocks the harry potter party" and STILL get a gaggle of girls to squeal riotously. Plus, who doesn't love it when performers throw balloons (that they probably blew up themselves) at their audience?

The Harry Potter "Midnight Madness" - at least that's what Barnes & Noble promised me...

Pushing towards the doors to Barnes and Noble amidst excited crowds and idiot drivers who'd scream obscenities at us from their cars, was more difficult than expected. But, I managed to get through, and what a sight! At this point, i noticed all the people dressed up and involved in heated battles of Harry Potter trivia. Torn between rushing back to my car and calling Laura, claiming to suddenly be inflicted with stomach flu, or sticking with it and accepting my geekiness, I decided to stay. I wouldn't cop out, I refuse. Anywho, the night was filled with many laughs (many of those at my expense). Here are some pictures to illustrate my point...

the reason why i'm laughing here? i just beat out a group of seven year olds to take a picture with the cute wizard--hehe. that, and he told me to hold his wand, and of course, my dirty mind wandered to the gutter...

me and laura getting "sorted." the best part of these pictures has to be the somewhat disgruntled barnes and noble worker who had to wear a costume and play pre-recorded sound bites from the movie to figure out what house you belonged to.

of course, what kind of event in LA would this be without a guy in drag? i mean, really now?

the biggest surprise of the night? why, seeing our high school bio teacher, mr. sanga, of course!

so there you have it. after years of following this series, i finally indulged in my geeky love for it.
i must say I'm a bit sad we can't do this again. oh well.

Someone must be mocking me...

In a rare act of graciousness, my mother actually bought me a three-disc set of Andrew Lloyd Webber songs! Shocking, to say the least. Now, I can belt out to “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” in the privacy of my own car!

Anywho, this got me thinking about a certain incident last semester in my creative writing class. We were working on our plays and one of my characters said something along the lines of: “The only good excuse to have that kind of hair these days is if you’re in the cast of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar.’” And surprisingly enough, everyone in my group got the reference, except for this one girl. So we started to explain what the musical was about and all that, and I started to explain how Jesus and all his followers were a bunch of hippies, and they were dancing in some junkyard and in jumping up and down in some city and how they had on these crazy mismatched outfits and crazy make-up and face paint. At this point, I vaguely noticed how some of the guys were looking at me oddly, but I just kept going anyway. Going on about their afros and a baptism in some local park fountain and so on.

Ok. Fast forward to a couple weeks later, and I’m watching VH1’s “I Love the 70s” and they start talking about “Jesus Christ Superstar,” but it wasn’t the Jesus Christ Superstar I remember from Ms. Abrera’s class. In this one, they were in the desert and Jesus looked like a classic movie Jesus. There was no face paint. No corduroy bellbottoms. No crazy hair (at least for Jesus, that is).

It turns out, I was describing the plot to “Godspell.” NOT “Jesus Christ Superstar.” What are the odds that two rock and roll musicals about Jesus came out in 1973? Goodness, those guys must’ve thought I was a complete freak! Oh well.

Jesus Christ Superstar:

<lj-embed id="3" />

Godspell: (The musical i meant to refer to)

<lj-embed id="4" />
(yes, Jesus is played by Victor Garber, or as Alias fans know him as: Jack Bristow)

Last Veronica Mars episode...ever :(

Stupid CW. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. The CW announced its fall lineup and no veronica mars. Gilmore Girls just ended last week and after this week, my two favorite shows are gone...These two shows portrayed young teenage girls as smart and strong and funny, and proved that not all teen girls are the nymphomaniacal airheads like on other tv shows. gah!! this is SO upsetting.

2nd semester begins... oh joy. Tomorrow i officially start public speaking class-- and i have to "introduce" myself-- wonderful. My professor just sent the syllabus this afternoon, and i i will have 5 speeches this semester (and 5 subsequent panic attacks to be sure). I also have to do an "anecdotal" speech, which should detail an event or situation that was humorous or interesting. Can't wait for that one. Really, i can't. Bah!

I'm Korean?

So i survived my first week of college. It was daunting, to say the least.
On my first day, my mom decided that it was best for my grandpa to take me to school ( i dont know why). So, without my car, i couldn't leave all my extra crap in there, and instead had to lug it around the whole day. Then, I get to school, and the streets surrounding it had such bad traffic, that i saw people getting out of their cars to walk. So i said, ok grandpa, i'll just walk from here. It shouldn't be so bad, right? Oh, silly me. Those weren't college students jumping out of their cars. Of course not. It turns out, there's a high school right next to the university, and stupid me--i had to walk further than necessary and oh my poor stubby legs-- legs that have gotten no exercise whatsoever this entire summer-- had to suffer. I was late to my first class, which irritated me to no end, cuz i had to sit all the way in the back, and i couldn't see anything cuz i'm so damned short. My next class was much better-- English. My professor sounds like one of the characters from the Simpsons, and he looks like one too, only he isn't yellow. The rest of my classes were pretty boring except math-- well math is still pretty boring, but because my professor is british, his cool accent makes it much more interesting.

My second day was much more promising, that is until lunch.
You see, during lunch, i go find myself a tree, sit underneath it and eat there, maybe do some light reading (yes, yes i know. it's such a nerd thing to do, but hey i like the quiet.). So, lunch comes around the corner and i'm looking for my tree (it's the most beautiful thing, it has enough shade to keep me cool and just the right amount of sunlight to keep me warm), when the first thing i notice is this really hot guy reading a book, and i think to myself "wow." The second thing i notice is that he's sitting under my tree. MY tree! How dare he? But, because he's so hot, i wouldn't attack him or anything so i just looked around, and jackpot, i found a suitable tree. So, i rush to it before any other person gets it, when i pass by two asian boys, and i hear "oh look there's one." One? Oh no. No. NO. It's my tree. Mine. So, i quicken my pace towards said tree, when one of the two asian boys comes up to me, and starts going off on a schpiel about something or other, and because i'm so focused on my tree, i only got a few words like "meetings" and "closer to God" and "Bible studies" then something like "us Koreans." Koreans? I'm not Korean. At this i look up, and take the flyer this dude just gave me, and head off towards the tree when, because bible boy there kept trying to recruit me, someone else found refuge underneath it. So after finding another spot, underneath a much smaller tree, which barely provided any shade, i actually look down and read the flyer. It's for the Korean Campus Crusade for Christ. KCCC for short.

Oh wow. I wrote too much there. Too much of my rantings and ravings and whiny little anecdotes. Ok. So summary: College is something. It really is. (I hope i can make it through the entire thing.)

Quote of the Day

"Whenever I’m with my mother, I feel as though I have to spend the whole time avoiding land mines."
                                                                              - Amy Tan

So i'm starting school in 3 days, terrified out of my wits, and so I decided to listen to some elton john classics to soothe my nerves, when, in comes my mother chiding, "Aww. Honey. Elton John? On a saturday night alone? Really?"

Well, I think Elton John is awesome.
In his own special way.
"I am my own rainbow..."

So last week was pretty interesting. It started on Monday, when my grandmother made me go with her to visit her doctor in downtown, and because no one could take us, we had to use the bus. What would have been a 20 minute drive turned to an hour, and goodness. If I thought i was a germaphobe, this one lady came in equipped with baby wipes (she had no baby) and gloves (she was not a doctor, unless doctors suddenly felt the need to wear pink hot pants on their way to work, but hey-- it's l.a. so who knows). Holding back a snicker, I couldn't help but think of this one article I read here.

Oh and the best gift ever (from my grandma's doctor, of course) :
.
(I'll try and get one for you too, katie)

the rest of the day was ok. we went to all these fabric stores in the fashion district.
i would've taken more pictures but i didnt want to get mugged.

I wrapped up the week with a movie with Laura on friday and Korea Day! with Katie and Marielle on Saturday. So all in all, a wonderful week. I hope this week is just as good (i hope i pass my driver's test--eek!)

Oh those silly Germans

Project Runway Season 3: TO-NIGHT—TONIGHT-----My world has turned all BRIIIIIIIGHTTTTTT!!!!!!-- I hope it's as good as last season (although, nothing can beat Andrae's [my hero] meltdown or Santino’s impersonations). Heidi Klum is so awesome. I would say she’s my favorite German, but that goes to Katie [just kidding. Actually it goes to my new favorite, Germany's left-field defender, Philipp Lahm—he's so adorable, and--AND, he's the shortest guy on the team-- 5'7, which makes him less than a foot taller than me, isn't that exciting?].

DysEnchanted

Check out "DysEnchanted"

I really liked this short film-- when i say short i mean 6 minutes long. And i totally love Alexis Bledel (Goldilocks) in this, as well as Laura Kightlinger (Cinderella)-- Laura was a writer on Will & Grace, i think. Oh! and she's also dating Jack Black. I think. Anywho, if you visit the DysEnchanted website-- it shows what each character is diagnosed with and what their "coping mechanisms" are, it's really funny. (At least i like to think so)

Here’s another one of those stupid questionnaires:

so, i was perusing through my old files ( maybe from 2 or so years ago) and i found this. yes, i admit, in a fit of boredom, i have wasted 5 or so minutes answering these insipid little questions, and now i give you my answers-- a look into my head, if you will:

First name?
Karissa
Were you named after anyone?
Ms. Beverly Hills (don’t ask)
Do you wish on stars?
What do you think I am? – Four? (don’t answer)
When did you last cry?
When I found out Rupert Everett was gay (my answer to everything)
What is your birth date?
11-23-88
What is your most embarrassing CD?
Linkin Park (the people at best buy made me)
Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Does a fish need water?
Would you bungee jump?
There’s not enough alcohol in the world
Do you think that you are strong?
Only when provoked
The first thing you notice about the opposite sex?
Posture
Have you ever been in love?
Define love

Who's the hottest news anchor?

So I was totally bored today, and i randomly remembered a conversation i had with marielle and katie in media class. Marielle and Katie were, as usual, making me fun of me for something, and after that was finally over, the age-old question was brought up: Just who is the hottest news anchor on television? This is who we came up with:

Karissa said : Jon Stewart

Marielle said: Rob Corddry

Katie said: Anderson Cooper

This one's for you, Katie!

"Introductions are tricky in a lesbian relationship.

Ok so i was perusing the world wide web, when i came across something so cute: Menopause, the Musical...in Korea! Yeah, no joke. If you don't believe me, check it out for yourself: http://www.menopausekorea.com/. Oh and as a tribute to Lisa's odd obsession with Korean people, here's what she sent me.

Belated Happy New Year, everyone! My New Year's Eve was so pathetic. I ended up watching a couple of episodes of "The Golden Palace", a spin-off of "The Golden Girls", which surprisingly includes both Cheech Marin (yes, Cheech from "Cheech and Chong") and Don Cheadle (can anyone say random?). Then, after a long dinner with the family, i ended the night with Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. That's right, give me a pint of Hagan- Daas ice cream and brand me spinster for life. Oh, and i almost forgot. How can I? It was basically the highlight of the evening. Well, my mother, every new year tries to find out what's lucky or other such nonsense, and this year she heard that oranges are good luck, so after dick clark's countdown i decided to go to my parents to greet them a happy new year. So i'm walking to the living room, and the floor is filled with oranges! I thought this was it, i've officially gone mental. I look up and see that my mom is tossing oranges around, and with a sigh of relief, i think to myself, oh good, it's my mother, not me. Then, i hear someone from outside making loud noises. I think they're plates or something, and i think to myself what kind of freak is out there making all this noise. To my relief the noise stopped. But, my relief was short lived when in walked my dad with a huge smile on his face and pots and pans in his hands. Gosh, if those oranges work, i really hope this year will be better than the last.
